Question

Pre-Laboratory Assignment A student following the procedure described in this module collected the following data 10 gas law constant. 2. What would be the volume of ydrogen gas by the reaction of 0.243 of magnesium metal and collected at 750 torr and 298 se the value for R found in Pre-Laboratory Assignment 1. 3. The results of this experiment are greatly affected by the care with which each of the steps is completed. a) Describe the error that would occur if the magnesium were to slide into the HCI in the test tube before the system is sealed off.

Explanation / Answer

(1) Mg (s) + 2 H+ (aq.) ---------> Mg2+ (aq.) + H2 (g)

1 mol of Mg produces 1 mol of H2

Moles of Mg used = 0.0243 / 24 = 0.00101 mol

So, moles of H2 produced, n = 0.00101 mol

V = 26.5 - 1.0 = 25.5 mL = 0.0255 L

P = 754 torr = 754 / 760 atm = 0.992 atm

T = 298 K

Ideal gas equation,

P V = n R T

R = 0.992 * 0.0255 / (0.00101 * 298)

R = 0.0840 L.atm.K-1.mol-1

(2) Moles of Mg used, n = 0.243 / 24 = 0.0101 mol

P = 750 torr = 750 / 760 = 0.987 atm

T = 298 K

R = 0.0840 L.atm.K-1.mol-1

V = ?

V = n R T / P

V = 0.0101 * 0.0840 * 298 / 0.987

V = 0.256 L

V = 256. mL
