Question
1a.) The face centered cubic unit cell contains both 6 and 4 coordinate holes. These are commonly referred to as octahedral and tetrahedral holes respectively. Determine the numer of octahedral holes per unit cell. Describe the location of these holes with reference to the face centered cubic unit cell cut-away drawing below.
The face centered cubic unit cell cut-away drawing:
1b.) Determine the number of tetrahedral holes per unit cell and describe the location of these holes with reference to the face centered cubic unit cell cut away drawing above.
Explanation / Answer
1.
A) number of octahedral void per unit cell=number of atoms per unit cell
We know that for FCC
Number of atoms per unit cell=4
So number of octahedral hole=4
In FCC octahedral voids are present at body centre as well as at each edge centre.
B) number of tetrahedral void per unit cell=2×number of atoms per unit cell
Number of atoms per unit cell=2×4=8
In FCC tetrahedral voids are present below each edge centre.
