Sample A 100 g 62.7 mL

Sample b 100 g 113.6 mL

A. Based on the data table of densities to the right, what most likely is Sample A? What most likely is Sample B? Show your calculations!

B. Will Sample A float in water? Why?

C. Will Sample B float in water? Why.

Explanation / Answer

Density = Mass/ Volume

For Sample A, Density(A)= 100/62.7 = 1.595 g/mL

1mL= 1 cm3

Density(B)= 100/ 113.6 =0.880 g/mL

Now we have both the densities.So check which elements in teh table have these densities.

So, Sample A= Carbon tetrachloride = 1.595 g/mL

Sample B= Benzene = 0.880 g/mL

Density of water = 1 g/cc

Compounds with density less than water will float on water and whihc have density more than water will sink in water.

Benzene has a density less than water so will float and carbon tetrachloride will sink because it has a density more than water.
