Question

Using the data collected in steps 1, 3, 6, and 7, predict the polarity of each molecule. List each molecule as polar or nonpolar. H_2 HF CH_4 CH_3F CH_2F_2 CHF_3 CF_4 BF_4 NH_3 HCN In the next step, students investigate the polarity of these molecules. Navigate to on Play with Simulations. Next, click the Chemistry heading on the left. In the new page, click on Molecule Polarity icon. A new page will appear; click on the play button to launch the simulation in Java. Select the parameters Bond Dipole, Partial Charges. Bond Character, and turn on the Electric Field (see Figure 8.8). Experiment with two and three atoms using the tabs at the top of the window, adjusting the electronegativity of Atoms A, B, and C using the yellow, green, and red sliders, respectively. Note that a polar molecule will orient itself within the electric field such that the partially negative side of the molecule faces the positively-charged plate.
