Question
A wine-dispensing system uses argon canisters to pressurize and preserve wine in the bottle. An argon canister for the system has a volume of 73.6 mL and contains 40.3 g of argon. Part A Assuming ideal gas behavior, what is the pressure in the canister at 307 K ? Express your answer with the appropriate units. p = Part B When the argon is released from the canister it expands to fill the wine bottle. How many 750.0-mL wine bottles can be purged with the argon in the canister at a pressure of 1.35 atm and a temperature of 307 K ?
Explanation / Answer
a) Ideal gas ==> PV = nRT ( With V (liter), P (atm) , R constant = 0.082)
moles Argon = 40.3/40 = 1.00 moles
==> P = nRT/V = 1.00* 0.082*307/(73.6/1000)= 342.03 atm
b)we use the formula V= nRT/P
Remember the moles number has almost never changed theoretically
==> Volume of Argon =1.00 * 0.082* 307/ 1.35 = 18.65 lit = 18650 mL
==> Number of wine bottles = 18650 / 750 = 24.87 bottles
