Question

A newly discovered metal called "Ofelium" is undergoing testing in the plant for use in the Copper-Chlorine cycle. The metal will be used for a pipe to transport 10 M HCl to regenerate Copper (I) Chlorine. For the 30-day experiment, the sample billet of Ofelium was to be kept at 1.65 V to determine if there would be any unexpected corrosion products generated that would contaminate the system downstream. After retrieving the sample 30-days later, it was found to be heavily corroded. The internship student that was previously tasked to write up the results suddenly decided that they had better things to do. They quit, leaving behind a sheet of paper with the following information: As the next employee in line, your supervisor tells you to figure out what happened and write up the report.

Explanation / Answer

Since the pipe line is used to transport HCl H+ is available and the first reduction reaction of Of to Of2O is happening.

Due to the reaction between CuO and CuCl2 oxygen is produced

which results in the production of OfO and OfO2.

The reduction potential of OfO/OfO2 is the highest. Therefore this can result in removing more Of metal from the pipe line reaulting corrosion.

The equilibrium constant of the reaction Of2+ to OfO is a very high value. Thus the released metal tend to pass out with the aqueous solution than depositing back on the pipe line.

Because of these reasons this metal pipes tend to corrode and form many contaminants during the process.
