Question
A newly discovered metal called "Ofelium" is undergoing testing in the plant for use in the Copper-Chlorine cycle. The metal will be used for a pipe to transport 10M HCl to regenerate Copper (I) Chlorine. For the 30-day experiment, the sample billet of Ofelium was to be kept at 1.65 V to determine if there would be any unexpected corrosion products generated that would contaminate the system downstream.
After retrieving the sample 30 days later, it was found to be heavily corroded. Using the following information and Pourbaix diagrams, explain what happened.
Explanation / Answer
10 M of HCl must have caused more acidic medium leading to increased potential and this might have
triggered extreme passivation reaction which gave rise to unwanted or unexpected corrosion products.
According to Pourbaix diagrams the potential for CuCl at moderate acidic scale PH i.e from a scale of
0 - 7 should be between 0.2V to 0.4V.
