Question
I have Zinc Sulfate Heptahydrate. I need to make medication that has 30mg of Zinc Citrate Dihydrate in it per pill. I need to use Zinc Sulfate Heptahydrate to make this medication and ensure that the amount of elemental Zinc (active ingredient) is the same as the amount that would be in 30mg of Zinc Citrate Dihydrate. Please note that there is 1 mole of Zinc per 1mole of Zinc Sulfate Heptahydrate and there are 3moles of Zinc per 1 mole of Zinc Citrate Dihydrate. Please show full work step by step. Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
Zinc Sulfate Heptahydrate Zn(SO4) . 7 H2O Molar mass = 287.54 g/mol
Zinc Citrate Dihydrate C12H14O16Zn3 molar mass = 610.368 g/mol
30 mg of zinc citrate will contain (no. of moles) = mass of zinc citrate / molar mass of zinc citrate = 30 * 10-3 g / 610.368 g/mol = 0.04915 * 10-3 moles
1 mol of zinc citrate will contain 3 mol of zinc molecule
0.04915 * 10-3 moles will contain 3 * 0.04915 * 10-3 = 0.147 * 10-3 moles of zinc molecule
so we require 0.147 * 10-3 moles of zinc molecule for medication
1 mol of zinc sulfate heptahydrate will contain 1 mol of zinc molecule
0.147 * 10-3 moles zinc sulfate heptahydrate will contain 0.147 * 10-3 moles of zinc molecule
No. of moles of zinc sulfate heptahydrate required = 0.147 * 10-3 moles
Mass of zinc sulfate heptahydrate required = No. of moles zinc sulfate heptahydrate* molar mass of zinc sulfate heptahydrate
= 0.147 * 10-3 moles * 287.54 g/mol = 42.398 10-3 g = 42.398 mg
so you have take 42.398 mg of zinc sulfate heptahydrate Answer
