1. Mass number (A) = the no. of protons in the nucleus (np) + no. of neutrons in the nuceus (nn)

example:for carbon np=6 and nn= 6

then A= 6+6=12

2. The charge on the species (n)= no. of protons in the nuceus(np)- no.of electrons (ne)

given oxygen no. of protons 6 and electrons=8

n=6-8=-2
