Question

a 1.o ml volume or 0.010 M H2SO is added to a mix it 6 drops of 0.010 M HIO3, 14 drips of deionized water and 1 drop of starch solution. a color change in the reaction mix occurred after 56 seconds.
a. assuming 20 drops per mL for all so solutions, determine the initial molar concentrarion of HIO3 after the mixing but before any relationship occurs. (at time =0)

b. the rate of the reaction is measured by the disappearnce of HIO3. for the reaction mix in this question what is the reaction rate? express the reaction rate in units of mol HIO3/L ÷ sec to the correct number of sig figs

Explanation / Answer

a)mol of HIO3 = 6 * 1mL/20 drops * 1L/1000mL * 0.010M = 3*10-6 mol
b) Before finding out the rate it is important to find out the total volume,
total volume will be = [(6+14+1)drops * (1mL/20 drops)] + 1mL = 2.05 mL * 1L / 1000mL = 2.05*10-3L
reaction rate = mol of HIO3 / total volume in L = 3*10-6 mol HIO3 / 2.05*10-3L = 1.4634*10-3mol HIO3/L
