Explanation / Answer
Objective:
To find the density of solid i.e. a metal substance and a liquid i.e. water.
Reaction mechanism:
To find the density of the substance, we should know, the mass of the substance and the volume of the same mass of the substance
For liquids we do this by taking the mass of the known volume of liquid and for solids we do this by taking the the volume of known mass of the solids. In both cases we will then divide the mass by volume in order to obtain the density
Procedure:
A) steps for determining the density of liquid
1) Take an empty graduated cylinder, find the mass of the cylinder.
2) now, fill the cylinder with 50 ml of water
3) Take the mass of the cylinder again after addition of water
4) now, find the mass of water by substracting the mass of the empty cylinder from the mass of water filled cylinder.
5) now, find the density of liquid, i.e. water by applying the formula, density = mass/volume
Steps for finding the density of the solid
1) take an empty graduated cylinder. Take the mass of it
2) Add 50 ml water and again take the mass of it
3) Take the metal block, the density of which is needed to be determined and add it to the water
4) Note the volume change
5) Again take the mass three together.
6) Sucbstract the masses (cylinder + water + metal) - (cylinder + water) = mass of metal
7) Apply the formula Density = mass/volume.
Observations:
Density of the liquid
Mass of the empty cylinder = 40.63 g
Volume of water filled = 50 ml
Mass of the cylinder + water = 90.52
mass of water = 90.52 -40.63 =49.89 g
Density = mass/volume = 49.89/50 = 0.9978g/ml
Density = mass/volume
Density of the solid
Mass of empty cylinder = 40.63 g
Volume of water = 50 ml
Mass of cylinder with water = 110.08
Mass of cylinder + metal + water = 127.86
Final volume = 53 ml
Change in volume = 3 ml
Mass of metal = 18.77
Density = 18.77/3 = 6.25g/ml
