Question

13. The solubility of any gas in a liquid can always be increased by ________

A. increasing the pressure of the gas above the solvent.

B. using a solvent that can form hydrogen bonds.

C. using a solvent that is nonpolar.

D. increasing the temperature.

E. decreasing the pressure of the gas above the solvent.

16. Which statement regarding the fractional distillation of two substances is not correct?

A. When the vapor at any stage of the distillation is condensed, the resulting distillate has the same composition as the original mixture of the two substances.

B. The substance with the lower boiling point has a higher concentration in the vapor than in the liquid.

C. The substance with the higher vapor pressure has a higher concentration in the vapor than in the liquid.

D. The boiling point of the mixture is not constant, changing as the distillation progresses.

E. The mole ratio of the two substances in the vapor is not the same as it is in the liquid.

Explanation / Answer

According to Henrys law H =C/P

where C= Concentratin of a compound in liquid phase and P= partial pressure of the compound. gas. So concentration of a compound is increased by an increase in pressure. hecne an increase in pressure increases the concentration of that compound in liquid phase. Alternatively, decreasing the temperature also increases the solubility of gas in liquid. So A is correct.

b) Lower boiling point refer to higher vapor pressure. Hence a compound is having lower boiling point ( or high vapor pressur) gets enriched in the vapor phase.    As a result, the mole ratio in the vapor phase is not same as in the liquid.

As the distillation proceeds, the composition changes which changes the boiling point of mixture.    So B,C D and E are correct.

when vapor is completly condensed, the liquid composition is same as vapor phase composition. This is not true in fractional distillation. Hence A is the correct answer.
