Make a positive response to the comment below (no paraphrasing please) At present there is a planned change that we will have to deal with at my organization. This change has to do with moving from the building that we are currently using to another unknown location. This has been in the making for a few years. At first, we were told that only some departments will move from some of the floors to go to other floors, but now, we will all have to move. This has been causing employees to be somewhat nervous because it could mean many things for a lot of people including longer travel time especially if they move out of Montgomery County. This change that we are about to experience is causing some resistance because people have become so accustomed to their routes and we are in a very nice location where there are good options to have lunch etc. The first recommendation I would make is to have a meeting with employees and the planning committee so that they will be kept in the loop of the progression of the change since they will also have to make plans regarding moving from the current location. I would also ensure that regular updates are sent by email to let the employees know of the status of the change. My organization fits in the Phase V since there is nothing that the employees can do to stop the plans to go forward with the move. People seem to be back to “square one” about how they feel about the change. Hope they will find a location even closer to my house. I guess everyone is hoping for the same thing.
Explanation / Answer
It is difficult to accept change as an important part as people tend to get accustomed to the usual ways of life. Similarly it is not a surprise that the planned change at my organization has been met with so much of resistance. The building has been planned to move to a different location which is not known to people. This will practically change most of the aspects like change of routes, location and introduction to new places of meals. The present location of the building is a preferred and nice place because of the familiarity to it along with the convenient centers close by.
It would be useful for the planning committee to take the employees on their side by giving them an update about the plans. This change might actually be a preferable one after a while; since every change which is initially met with little apprehension becomes easy. It is exactly like starting the job at Montgomery County and having to adjust initially. However we did adjust and enjoy it after while so this new location might also be preferred by us.
Also the planning committee can select few representative from the employees so the employees feel like they are not pushed out of the decision process or planning process. They will also have a sense of confidence that there opinion matters or they are vital part of the organization. Thus the planning committee can ensure these updates are given to the employees through the representatives who can attend the meeting.
