Watch the following clip of Tim Robbins in the film The Hudsucker Proxy: “You know, for kids!”

The film is loosely set in the 1950s. Based on that (that it takes place in the 1950s), and then only using the information that is available in the clip (his idea is basically a two-dimensional circle on a napkin, that it is “you know, for kids!”, and that it is his “ticket upstairs” to promotion) brainstorm a list of 5-10 possible inventions he has in mind. Then choose the one invention from your list that you think is the correct one. Post your list of 5-10 ideas and then the one you chose as the “ticket upstairs”.

Explanation / Answer
According to me, following is the list of 5 possible inventions that Tim Robbins has in mind in the movie “The Hudsucker Proxy”:
1. Frisbee.
2. Hula hoop - a large plastic ring used for revolving round one’s body.
3. Hoop-la ring (Hoop-la is a game in which rings are tossed to surround an object to be won as prize).
4. Tire rim to be used by kids to play.
5. Bangle to be worn by girls.
The one invention from the above list that is the correct one is the Hula Hoop. Hudsucker Industries became famous for its invention of the Hula Hoop, which became very popular in USA.
My list of 5 possible inventions would include the following:
1. A steel rim to be used as a swing.
2. A pack of four small round plastic toys for juggling.
3. Friendship band.
4. An aesthetically designed steel rim to be used as a prop in gymnastics or for dancing.
5. A colorful circular piece of steel to be used as a home décor.
If I had been Tim Robbins, I would have chosen “steel rim to be used as a swing” as my “ticket upstairs”.
