Watch the following clip of Tim Robbins in the film The Hudsucker Proxy: “You know, for kids!”

The film is loosely set in the 1950s. Based on that (that it takes place in the 1950s), and then only using the information that is available in the clip (his idea is basically a two-dimensional circle on a napkin, that it is “you know, for kids!”, and that it is his “ticket upstairs” to promotion) brainstorm a list of 5-10 possible inventions he has in mind. Then choose the one invention from your list that you think is the correct one. Post your list of 5-10 ideas and then the one you chose as the “ticket upstairs”.

Subject : Stategy for innovation and entrepunership

Explanation / Answer

The list of ideas as shown in the video are:

1. A gadget just like a hula hoop. The character in the video says that the gadget is healthy as well as fun. Sand can be put inside the gizmo to make the experience much more pleasant and interesting. Lastly the gizmo will be cheap.

2. A Frisbee - It will be like a flying disc that will be used for recreational activities like throwing and catching.

3. Flexi straw - These are flexible straws that come in different attractive colors and are convenient to use.

4. A device that will be able to resolve desperate and hopeless situations in ways that are unbelievable. This idea was shown when Moses sticks his broom in the clockwork.

5. A musical watch that will tell time to the kids.

The correct invention is the hula hoop. Parents are looking to buy something for their children that will keep them engaged in a meaningful way on one hand, while also helping them get some exercise and helping them to stay fit and active. This is the correct invention from a commercial point of view as the cost of making a hula hoop is very low and the company can generate surplus profits on a sustainable basis in the long run.
