1. The seating arrangements will determine whether the atmosphere will be formal or informal. Usually, the person being interviewed will be more comfortable in an informal atmosphere. A seating arrangement where a particular authority is being asserted by the interviewer by occupying the head seat or the seat of authority, will make the atmosphere formal.
Suppose, there is a rectangular conference table in the room and there is a recognizable head seat or seat of authority. When the interviewer occupies the head seat, a formal tone is set and the affect on the person being interviewed is that he/she may get slightly tensed.
However, when the interviewer avoids the seat of authority and sits across the person being interviewed, then no authority is being asserted and the person being interviewed will be more relaxed and at ease. Different arrangements may be productive, depending on the type of interview being conducted, the context of the interview.
2. The appearance of the interviewer will set the tone for the interview. When the interviewer is dressed formally, a formal tone is set. People who are formally dressed are perceived to be more professional and intelligent. This will make the person being interviewed slightly tense. On the other hand, when the interviewer is dressed casually, the tone that sets in is less formal and the person being interviewed is slightly relaxed and at ease. Different styles of dress may be productive in interviews under different circumstances. When the interview has to be collaborative, then dressing casually is the better option.
3. An interview with a person who is angry and hostile should be handled very carefully. Try and conduct the interview in such a manner that no arguments arise. Secondly, put across your points in polite and subtle manner. When the angry person sees your positivity, he/she will calm down eventually. At any stage during the interview, the angry person should not be provoked.
4. When dealing with a dishonest person in an interview, try and find out the motive of that person for being dishonest. Next, one should very subtly and indirectly hint that you are aware that the person is being dishonest and this approach will yield him/her no good. If the person continues being dishonest, then use a direct approach to confront the person.
