Explanation / Answer

Breathing comprises of two processes- inhalation and exhalation.

Inhalation occurs when the external intercoastal muscles contract causing the ribs to move upward. This lowers the diaphragm as a result volume of the thoracic cavity increases. This decreases the pressure inside the lungs causing air to move inside.

During expiration, internal intercoastal muscles contract. This causes ribs to pull back to their normal position. This causes the diaphragm to relax and air pressure increases inside the lungs. As a result inside air is expelled out from the body.
