IT happens quite frequently in everyday life that the flow of communication is interrupted by inadequate attention from by listener. It happens at work and personal life. Some of my personal experiences affirm that active listening is critical to communication and the lack of it can have serious consequences at times.

I was negotiating a service contract with a supplier. There were an elaborate set of technical aspects and service level agreements that were part of the contract. The supplier person was taking note of the points being discussed, but simultaneously he was so actively occupied in talking and making an enthusiastic pitch in advance, that he missed capturing a few critical points which were underlying assumptions for calculating the repair and service costs during the course of Annual maintenance contract. This information was not empirical finding was critical to make a feasible and economically sustainable business case for the vendor. Vendor lost the contract because of submitting a proposal which was inadequate and therefore not shortlisted by the technical committee responsible for approving the technical scope of work for the contract.

It happens in personal life at home as well, when my wife speaks out a verbal list of merchandise to bring from the local supermarket and because of inactive listening, I usually end up missing a few items, which fail to get registered in the memory because of inadequate attention.
