1. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of collaborating on a development project?
2. How does the mode of collaborating (e.g., strategic alliance, joint venture, licensing, outsourcing, collective research organization) influence the success of a collaboration?
3. Identify an example of collaboration between two or more organizations. What were the advantages and disadvantages of collaboration versus solo development? What collaboration mode did the partners choose? What were the advantages and disadvantages of the collaboration mode?
4. If a firm decides it is in its best interest to collaborate on a development project, how would you recommend the firm go about choosing a partner, a collaboration mode, and governance structure for the relationship?
Explanation / Answer
Answer:- The advantages of collaboration include sharing costs and development risks, combining complementary skills and resources, enabling transfer of knowledge between firms, the joint creation of new knowledge, and facilitating creation of shared standards. Disadvantages of collaboration include determining if the resources provided by a partner are a good fit, the potential of exploitation, and the expropriation of a firm's knowledge with little in return. Loss of control over direction, loss of complete benefits. Loss of resource development and absorptive capacity.
Answer:- It depends less on the mode of collaboration than on how well suited partners are to each other, including their relative size and strength, the complementarity of their resources, the alignment of their resources and the similarity of their values and culture - their resource and strategic fit. Once the resource and strategic fit is known, then the mode of collaboration establishes the processes, standards and expectations for governance and monitoring of the effort
Answer:- Sangamo and Biogen (case study) is an example of a collaborative partnership. The advantages to collaboration for Sangamo were access to funds to continue development, and gaining a partner (Biogen) with expertise in advanced clinical trials and drug commercialization. Biogen gained access to proprietary technology (and tacit knowledge about ZFNs) with a potential future profit potential greater than their investment. Based on the case study, a licensing agreement was used. The advantages to Biogen of this mode included fast access to technology at a lower cost than internal development, and leveraging of existing competencies; the advantages to Sangamo included retaining control of proprietary technology and gaining resources to remain solvent. The disadvantages of included that the collaboration objective was not central to either firm's long term objectives (for Biogen, a risky allocation of resources on a future development, for Sangamo, a distraction from product commercialization forcing resources to be allocated to a specific application of ZFNs).
Answer;- I would recommend using the same qualitative and quantitative methods (used to assess the project decision) to assess the partner decision - including the same people and stakeholders.
