Question

For the set of tasks given below, do the following:

c. Determine the minimum number of workstations for output of 500 units per day. (Round up your answer to the next whole number.)

  Minimum number of workstations ____________

Calculate the percentage idle time for the line using the 50 second cycle time. (Round your answer to 1 decimal place. Omit the "%" sign in your response.)

Task Task Time (seconds) Imediate Predecessor a 45 ----- b 11 a c 9 b d 50 ----- e 26 d f 11 e g 12 c h 10 c i 9 f,g,h j 10 i (193)

Explanation / Answer

Sum of the activities times is 193 seconds.

It is stated that determine the minimimum number of workstations for output of 500 units per day but nothing is mentioned about the working hours per day.

Theoritical minimum number of workstations = Sum of all activities times / Desired cycle time where Desired cycle time = Available time / Output level

Assuming 8 hours per day for work, the Cycle time = 8*60*60/500 = 57.6 seconds per unit of output

Therefore theoritical , minimum number of workstations is 4 (193/57.6) but actual number of workstations is as follows:

In case the cycle time is 50 seconds, the workstations are as follows:

From the above table, the total number of workstations is five and the total time available is 250 seconds, out of which idle time is 57 seconds. Therefore percentage of idle time is 22.8 ((57/250)*100).

Workstation No. Tasks Time used 1 a, b 56 2 d 50 3 c, e,f, h 56 4 g, i, j 31
