Question
ACME Pharmaceuticals has developed a new drug, Vaxidene, which is administered in the form of a pill. The target amount for a single dose is 500 mg. Patients can receive as little as 495mg or as much as 505mg without experiencing ill effects. Because of liability issues, ACME has determined that it is imperative that the patient receives as close to the target dose as possible. At present, the process mean is 500mg and the standard deviation is 10mg. a. What is the process capability index for Vaxidene? Is the acceptable? Explain. b. What standard deviation is necessary for a process capability index value of 2?
Explanation / Answer
Cpk=Min (mean-Lower Specification , Upper Specification - Mean )
3*Sd 3*Sd
Cpk= Min((500-495)/(3*10) , (505-500)/(3*10))
= Min(0.33,0.33)= 0.33 the Cpk is less than 1 and will generate defects hence is not acceptable
To achieve Cpk of 2 Sd= 0.83
(500-495)/(3*x)=2
x=5/6=0.83
