Question

Figure 1 represents the output from three different suppliers, where each supplier is attempting to produce the same product for a common customer. For example, supplier 1 has a process with a mean value of 203, and a standard deviation of 2. The customer’s upper specification limit for the product (USL) is 210, and the lower specification limit (LSL) is 190. Calculate the process capability indices based on the current process at each supplier. Then calculate the potential process capability index for each supplier. What are the Sigma Levels for each supplier? What is the Sigma Capability value for each supplier? What is the estimate of the nonconforming PPM for each supplier?

Figure 1 - Output from Three Suppliers

Explanation / Answer

process capability of each supplier from the Figure 1,

To find out Process capability indices for eac supplier,

Cpk = Min((USL-Mean/3 * SD), (Mean-LSL)/3*SD))

For supplier 1, Cpk = 2.166. For supplier 2 ,Cpk = 1.61 and supplier 3, Cpk = 1.33.

Sigma level for each supplier,

Z-score/Sigma level = (USL-Mean)/ SD

For supplier 1, Sigma level = 3

For supplier 2, Sigma level = 3.5

For supplier 3, sigma level = 3.17
