Explanation / Answer

1. Non-verbal communication is a crucial part of our daily life irrespective of whether we are using electronic means or face-to-face means. Non-verbal communication includes the body language of an individual, his facial expressions and degree of eye contact, as well as volume, rate, and pitch of voice. Non-verbal communication is very crucial for effective communication between two or more individuals. However, there can be some communication problem due to non-verbal factors. The non-verbal cues of individuals from different countries are highly dependent on their respective cultures. Same expression, gestures, hand movements, or other non-verbal actions can be interpreted very differently in two different cultures. Due to this reason, miscommunication might arise and people can get offended.

Richness of medium refers to the information carrying capacity of a particular medium. Medium carrying higher volume of information is considered to be high in richness and vice versa. Different media channels have different level of richness of information. In case of non-verbal communication, richness of medium can also cause communication problem. For example, in case of face-to-face interaction, people can see the body language, gesture, posture, eye contact of the other person besides his voice. Hence, this medium results in more effective communication rather than telephonic medium where the people can only listen to other person’s voice.

The problems associated with the non-verbal communication is difficult to overcome, however people can do so by cross-culture training and gathering knowledge about other country’s non-verbal communication technique before interacting with an individuals. People should also avoid stereotyping and developing perception regarding people of other countries.
