Have you ever heard of the "waiter rule"? The Waiter Rule refers to a common belief that one's true character can be gleaned from how one treats staff or service workers, such as a "waiter". Using the Waiter Rule can be an accurate predictor of character because it isn’t easily learned or unlearned. It is more likely a person’s true colors and speaks to how they were raised and their value system. How a manager treats a waiter may reveal how they treat employees.

Many business people think that how you treat service workers says alot about your character and attitudes. What do you think this means? Do you agree with this idea? Why or why not? How would you be evaluated on the "waiter rule"?

Yes, I do agree with this idea because this idea calls upon the basic thought of dignity of labour. This means that irrespective of the designation or profession of the employee, everyone should treat him/her the same. As a basic work ethic, one should not discriminate based on the kind of work a person does. It must be understood that all professions are required and that there is no “greater” or “better” job compared to other jobs.

A lot can be judged about a person’s character based on this “waiter rule” and it basically talks about how one treats another person who is serving him. I would be evaluated in a positive way according to the waiter rule, as I always ensure all service staff are treated with utmost respect and dignity. Just because certain job roles require more manual labour, doesn’t automatically give anyone the right to demean them or treat them lesser than anyone else.
