Question

There are many theories for the stages/phases of team development. The five-stage model is one of them. This model is only valid in a few very precise team formations scenarios. Think of a team in which you have participated (project team at work, sport team, etc.). Think back on how the team formed from the first day until the end of the project, or sporting season. Describe what took place. How did you progress into the next stage/phase of team development? Which theory of team development most applied to your example? Why?I I want an answer that is different from the one an expert use on this site!

Explanation / Answer

Ans. I had one example where we were asked to form a team for Social Development Project. As it was up to us to choose our own team, I started looking for people which are capable of performing some tasks. I looked for a person who loves interacting with people so that he will be the face of our team. Second, I look for a person who is very enthusiastic for social projects so that he/she can motivate us. Third, some hard-working people who have knowledge of designing, programming etc.

Now as we have formed a team, we get together for deciding tasks and responsibilities. All were saying different things about their duties. It was quite difficult to come to a single conclusion. After some struggle, we come to one opinion and I was chosen as a leader of the group. Now everyone starts performing his/her duties. Everyone was also helping each other to complete the tasks.

Finally, after working together and performing duties explicitly, our project comes to an end and every one of us was happy about how it goes.

As I can see my project follows 5 stage model of team development i.e.

1. Forming

2. Storming

3. Norming

4. Performing

5. Adjourning
