Question

A small, privately owned Asian company is producing a prlvale-label soft drink Yoggo. A botling line puts the son drinks into plastic bottles and then packages the bottles into boxes holding 10 bottles each. The botting line is comprised of the foilowing 4 steps: (1) the bottling machine takes 1 second to fil a bottle 2 the lid achie takes 3 seconds to cove the botte with a l·3) a labeling m ach e takes 3 seconds per botto and 4 the packa i machine takos 4 se as to place a botie to a box when a bo has b en filed it 10 bott s, a worker tending the packaging machine removes the filed box and replaces it with an empty box. Assume that the time for the worker to remove a filed box and replace it with an empty box is negligible and hence dces not afect the capacity of the line Number of Seconds per bottle Process step Bottling a lid Bottling Packaging Apply a Lid Labeling fow di a. What is the capacity (bottles/hour) at the resource Apply a lid"? bottles per hour b. What is the bottlieneck in the process? C. Assuming unlimited demand, what would be the flow rate? botties per hour d Assuming unlimited demand, what would be the utlization at percent rsouroo "Apply a lid ? Assume the process started empty and that this is a machine- paced procoss. How long would it take to produce 500 bottlos? e. seconds

Explanation / Answer

Answer to question e :

Time it will take to produce 500 bottles when the process starts empty

= Amount of time it will take for the first bottle to go through all 4 processes and come out of the system + Cycle time of the system ( seconds per bottle) x 499 bottles

Since bottleneck process is the “Packaging” with cycle time of 4 seconds/ bottle, it decides the amount of time each bottle has to spend at each process ( processing + idle time ) .

Thus amount of time first bottle has to spend at each of 4 processes = 4 seconds

Therefore , amount of time first bottle will take to come out of the system = 4 x 4 = 16 seconds :

Also, overall cycle time of the system ( as decided by cycle time of the bottleneck process ) = 4 seconds / bottle

Therefore , amount of time taken for 499 bottles to come out of the system = 4 seconds/ bottle x 499 bottles = 1996 seconds

Therefore,

Time it will take to produce 500 bottles when the process starts empty

= Amount of time it will take for the first bottle to go through all 4 processes and come out of the system + Amount of time taken for 499 bottles to come out of the system

= 16 + 1996

= 2012 seconds

IT WILL TAKE 2012 SECONDS TO PRODUCE 500 BOTTLES

IT WILL TAKE 2012 SECONDS TO PRODUCE 500 BOTTLES
