Question
A small toy rocket engine is attached to smooth puck on a string ( L= 55cm) in such a way that the puck is moving in a circle on the large frictionless flat surface. The rocket engine exerts force that is always perpendicular to the string. The engine provides constant acceleration of 2m/s2 for 4 seconds and then stops working. Combined mass of the rocket engine and the puck is 700g. The puck starts from rest. Change of the mass of the rocket is negligible.
a) Find the total distance travelled by the puck in 4 seconds.
b) Find the tension in the rope at 4 seconds.
c) Find the period of the uniform motion established after the rocket engine stops. (3p)
Explanation / Answer
a)
d = 1/2 a t^2
=1/2*2*4^2 = 16 m
b)
Tension = m (a t)^2 / L
= 0.700*(2*4)^2/0.55 = 81.45 m/s^2
c)
Period T = 2 r / (a t)
= 2 *0.55/(2*4) = 0.43 s
