Question
A simulation of a major traffic intersection is to be conducted, with the objectives of improving current traffic flow. Provide three iterations, in increasing order of complexity, of steps 1 and 2 in the simulation process of Figure 1.3. (step 1 is Problem Formulation, step 2 is setting of objectives and overall project plan). You can find the figure problem 3 chapter 1 In Discrete-Event System Simulation 5th edition.

1.Iteration –
Problem formulation
The cars that are arriving at the intersection are controlled by the traffic light. The cars may go straight or to the left or right.
Setting of objectives and overall project plan
The objective should be that how should be the traffic light be sequenced? There should be average delay of cars. The resources required are 3 people for 7 days for data collection, 2 people for 4 days for data analysis, 2 people for 5 days for model building, 2 people for 3 days for running the model and 2 people for 4 days for implementation.
2. Iteration –
Problem formulation
Now same as above and plus the following, when the signal turns red right turn is allowed after full stop but noticing that no person is crossing the road and no vehicle is approaching the intersection.
Setting of objectives and overall project plan
Again the main objective is how should the traffic light be sequenced. There should be average delay time of all vehicles. The resources required are 3 people for 10 days for data collection, 2 people for 5 days for data analysis, 2 people for 6 days for model building, 2 people for 3 days for running the model and 2 people for 4 days for implementation.
3.Iteration-
Problem formulation
Now same as 2 above plus the following. Here trucks arrive at intersection. Vehicles then break down in the intersection making only one lane impassable. Accidents then occur because of the blocking traffic for a vast amount of time.
Setting of objectives and overall project plan
Again the main objective is how should the traffic light be sequenced? The road can be widened to 4 lanes to avoid traffic as the vehicles break down in the intersection. There should be average delay time of all vehicles. The resources required here are 3 people for 12 days for data collection, 2 people for 7 days for data analysis, 2 people for 7 days for model building, 2 people for 4 days for running the model and 2 people for 5 days for implementation.
