Question

Please answer all of the following questions:

Four particles with m asses m1 19 kg, m2 21 kg, m3 8 kg, and m4 40 kg sit on a very light (massless) metal sheet and are arranged as shown below. Find the moment of inertia of this system with the pivot point (a) at the origin and (b) at point P. Assume the rotation axis is parallel to the z direction, perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. mi4- -113 m2. (a) at the origin kg m (b) at point P kg m Need Help? For a CD of radius 4.0 cm, estimate the percentage change in the moment of inertia due to a hole of radius 7 mm. (Neglect the difference in mass due to the hole.)

Explanation / Answer

1.Assuming these are point masses (i.e., with no moments of inertia of their own),

then the MI about the pivot = sum[m(i)*r(i)^2], where r(i) is the distance between mass i and the pivot.

And the MI about the origin is found by the same formula but r(i) is the distance between mass i and the origin.

So just find the r values using thePythagorean theorem,.it might help to draw the setup on graph paper; then you can more easily determine and label the x and y distances.
