You are part of a team at your organization where you are employed currently or at an organization with which you are familiar. This team is made up of members of the different departments at the organization. The executive director has tasked each member of the team to independently research the following two questions (respond with one full paragraph for each question):

(1) What theory of leadership most closely aligns with our current practice within our organization and do you think it is most appropriate or would another serve us better?

(2) What leadership theory would you recommend that might be more effective, and why? (Note: if you think the current leadership theory is a good fit and is effective, explain why you think it is working and should remain in place).

On your own, you will have to conduct research on leadership theories and present a 2-paragraph summary of the central ideas of a leadership theory you believe is most appropriate for the organization.

Explanation / Answer

The transactional theory of leadership closely aligns with our practices. The leader exchanges the organization expectations of the team and the team works towards achieving those expectations. Based on the consequences or results of the team in achieving the expectations, punishments and rewards are given as of now. The teams were created within the departments and the director conveys the expectations of the project. This expectation serves as a means of exchange between the leader and followers which is the most important characteristic of the transactional theory of leadership. The main job of the leader in this leadership style is to create structures which the director has been doing effectively. Based on the structure, various components are allocated to the members of the team. The team members work towards meeting the expectations set by the director. The project is completed by meeting the expectation and based on the work performed by each team member in reaching the outcome, the rewards are announced. If a particular team member does not work properly and fails to meet the outcome, then the member will be penalized according to this leadership style. This is the most common form of leadership style and organizational structure that is practised by management across the globe. I think this transactional theory of leadership needs some alterations as the current team comprises members from various departments.
I recommend the transformational theory of leadership for the cross-departmental member team to be successful. This transactional or charismatic theory of leadership is essential for the director to engage more with the team members and establish a good connection with them in the due course of the project. This ensures that the team members are motivated and a sense of morality develops between the leader and the followers. The director must show strong character, confidence and extroversion to state the values of the organization in a clear manner and motivate the followers towards the values. In this case, the director must motivate the cross-departmental team members to reach the project goal and get their maximum potential. The main aspect of a transformational theory of leadership is to bring changes in an effective manner. I think that change is essential in our organization and the cross-departmental team members along with a charismatic leader can effectively bring the change in the organization. I think that these aspects of the transformational theory of leadership make it a perfect fit for our organization and strongly recommend this leadership style for a more effective performance.
