Question
You are a member of a task force at a multi-specialty practice that is planning to purchase an electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) system. Although you and the other task force members are aware of the diverse functional needs of your practice and of the potential capabilities of e-prescribing systems that would supposedly meet these needs, you are not convinced that any e-prescribing system will ultimately achieve a high level of adoption and use within the practice. You decide to do some modeling as part of systems analysis; however, you and your fellow task force members are working under tight deadlines and only have a very limited window of time in which to do the modeling.
1.What one kind of modeling would you opt to do in this scenario? Why?
2· How would doing this particular kind of modeling benefit the practice in the short term?
3· How would it benefit the practice farther along in the systems development life cycle?
Explanation / Answer
E-Prescribing system is process of generating a computer based medical prescription which can be transmitted and filled. This is becoming a recplacement of Paper based medical prescription. This allows doctors, nurses, chemists to transmit, fill and renew the medical prescription for next course. This also helps the doctor or physician to comprehend the previous medical history, allergies of the patient. It makes the work of a physician, chemist, nurse easy and efficient.
The Modelling I would like to opt in this scenario is that the paper based prescription must be in practice along with the e-prescription.It would be beneficial if the patient is given a print of the summary of the e-prescription.Also,it would be better if the physician or clinic mantains a database in which all the softcopies of e-prescriptions of patients are stored. It helps both physician and patients to retrieve the prescription in case of any e-disaster(data loss, server failure).
This particular kind of modelling will benefit the practice in shortterm in many ways such as in the case of erroneous updates. It may update a patient in an erronoeus way to take the drug which may exacerbate the condition of the patient due to over dosage. There might be many errors roping in during the intial stage of transformation from paper-based precsription to e-prescription which keeps both physician and patient in trouble as the chemists and nurses will be habituated to the existing paper-based prescription handling. This has to be taken care by proper cross verification and quality assurance team. The new system must be slowly adapted and integrated into the systematic life cycle of the clinical industry. The physician may also be mistaken and fill the wrong patient's prescription in an overlook.
It would benefit the practice in longer period in system's development lifecycle in such a way that consider a data theft has been taken place by a malware which is completely blocking the functioning of the software. You can consider the very familiar ransomware,in such case maintaining a archive file or backup file will help the clinics to restore the data. And even Paper based prescription with the patient helps to follow the medication.Downtime of the software may also affect the workflow, paper based precriptions can be substitutes in those scsenarios.Patient access may be stolen or lost or locked,This makes patient unable to obtain medicines or drugs as some of the clinics and places have completely abolished the practice of paper-based prescription.Maintaining a print of summary of E-prescription at both patient and clinic helps in such scenarios atleast till the people adapt the new change completely.
