Question

Pretend your workplace is an internal network, the outside world the Internet, and the front desk guard/receptionist is the firewall.

Give at least 3 real world examples of the types of physical "traffic" that the front desk would allow or deny from the outside world into the workplace, and from the workplace to the outside world (Be Creative!!).

For example, the FedEx delivery person is the "traffic".

The access rule would be access only to designated areas of the building, from 8 AM to 5 PM, and from M-F only.

Small packages to be delivered to the front (i.e. HTTP and network "back office") and large packages to the back (i.e. FTP and network "warehouse").

Explanation / Answer

Example 1:

Suppose requests(clients) from the outside world(internet), come to the workplace(internal network) to get the things done. But the request cannot be processed until all the nodes its gonna need to process the requests are up. Example, a client comes to the workplace and he wants to meet A,B,C to get some work done. Now he can not be allowed to meet them if A, B or C are busy with something else.

The internal network(office) can handle only a small amount of traffic(clients).
If A, B, C are in order A->B->C then if A is busy, we cannot let outside traffic(clients) in.

If the client gets to meet A, and the person A is putting up at 5th floor, he can go via the elevator (the elevator system being an optical fibre high speed communication channel) or the staircase (the low speed medium).

Example 2:

Traffic can be within the network (internal) also. Suppose person A needs to send a file to person B. Through peon(media) C. But C is busy, and he's carrying a stack of files(packets) with himself. Transporting files will take time, because of loads of packets on the media and each node waiting for its turn(aloha manner).

Example 3:

Even the reception can get busy with a queue of requests(clients) lining up at the front desk waiting to be assigned to a node( staff member). Due to heavy load on the link between internal network and internet.
This is in case of a star network, with the reception being in the center.
