Question
"Freedom with Fences” Please respond to the following: Reflect upon Robert Stephens’ discussion of “Freedom with Fences” from Chapter 1 of CIO Best Practices. Discuss the implications of this concept on the CIO, the IT organization, and the technologies that are managed by the IT organization. Assess the impact that the “Freedom with Fences” concept, as described by Robert Stephens, would have on the operations of an organization. Part 1, As systems become closer to the end user it is important for organizations to streamline and automate as much as can be done. This allows for the agile approach in our never-ending projects and allows us to implement iterations of a new product or upgrade of an existing. The ability to “test things out” is ingrained in most engineers and a good CIO will take this into consideration. The position of CIO should be to cultivate innovation and the employees ask questions. One of the most frustrating things in our line of work is the phrase “We have always done it that way”. This does not always make it the right way with newer technologies and processes. However, we do have to keep in mind the fact of regulations and laws that are associated with Information Systems. Keeping the balance between innovation and staying inside the lines takes talent. A secondary theme to the “Freedom with Fences” is the ability to become overwhelmed with the amount of information that we can use and I agree with the authors statement “information filtering” (Stenzel 5) as I know that even myself I use google to find snippets of code that can be used to enhance our teams processing. Part 2, being able to tailor a process or a commodity to the end user is important to today’s business. As stated in the text within the next ten (10) years through the use of personal rules and filters a customer and an IT person will be able to find exactly what they are needing at a given time. However, this does lead to ethic issues of personal information such as likes and dislikes being sent out to a primary company that allows others to purchase this information for further sales or malicious. To me I think that laws that govern electronic data will need to be revisited and revised to cover all aspects of a person’s personal data. As we know the speed of advance on new laws can be compared to a snail as the newer Bills go through the red tape of bureaucracy. We had be left with another form of emails. Google is start page emerged because Sergey Brin did not know html and css. When the enterprise can meet these subject to thorough review, conditions,
a best practice CIO will favour breaking rule while obeying them. means that employees can only break a rule by meeting strict criteria, and the CIO should carefully encourage this practice. There is also an extension of the 2nd rule inherent in Rule 3, when one
