"Ethical and social issues in information systems." It underscores the fact that our society has become very reliant on computers as technology has permeated the very fabric of our daily lives. It also highlights the many ethical and moral challenges associated with the misuse of these systems. By doing a search of the internet or by other research methods, use UBER or another example of an organization that had to deal with a challenge posed by the misuse of information systems.
1) What was the moral or ethical dilemma of Uber or another example?
2) How did technology contribute to this dilemma?
3) How did the organization respond to the situation?
4) What were the lessons learned?
5) What preventative controls do you think should have been put in place to avert this type of situation?

For this purpose let's consider the instance of UBER.
1. Ethical dilemma faced by uber was individuality versus community.
a. Drivers’ behavior has been a long-running problem at Uber and even the investigation would cost not only the reputation but also the profit. So Uber was in fuss whether to fire those sort of employee or to keep working them as a good employee satisfactor.
b. Viral video of CEO Kalanick arguing with Uber driver also damaged Uber’s reputation. Anyone can view such a video and decide whether certain behavior is acceptable. While most people can understand that driver compensation changes based on competition and profitability, Kalanick and the driver should have had a calm and rational conversation. Instead, Uber’s CEO exhibited unprofessional behavior.
c. Uber’s poor reputation may also have affected Disney’s decision to use Lyft Software. Disney bought 27 minivans from Chevrolet to transport Disney World visitors staying at Disney’s BoardWalk Resort and the Yacht & Beach Club. The film and entertainment giant opted to install Lyft’s software, rather than Uber’s.
2. The technology contributing the ethical dilemma in the following ways:
a. Security - Internet helps hackers to use IP address to access the user's computer and collect data for seflish reasons.Also the wide spread of internet cookies which collect information whenever we use the internet , has exposed IT users to high risks of fraud and conflicting interests.
b. Privacy Issues - As much as information technology has enabled us to share and find relevant information online,. It has also exploited our freedom of privacy.
c. Copyright Infringement - Information technology has made it easy for users to access any information or artifact at any given time. With the increased development of music sharing networks and photo bookmarking sites, many original creators of these works are losing the credibility of their works, because users of IT can easily gain access and share that data with friends.
d. Increased pressure on IT experts - Since information technology systems have to run all the time, pressure is mounted on IT experts to ensure the accuracy and availability of these systems. Many big organizations which need to operate 24 hours will require a standby IT team to cater for any issues which might arise during the course of operation. This pressure results into stress and work overload which some times results into Imperfection.
e. Digital divide - Information technology has many opportunities and it has shaped many industries in developed countries; however, developing countries have difficulties of enjoying the same benefits of Information technology. To get these benefits they have to train their labor and users should also adopt the new culture which is a bit costly in these developing countries.
3. To respond to the ethical dilemma an organisation need to handle the pressure ethically and timely, need not blow the whistle of the improper and illegal action under the internal management, disclosing the material upto the limit of what material is. and not to trade wrongfully in the distressed situation.
4.All that an organisation faces two types of problems. First is certain that something should be happen in a particular point of time which can be controlled by the strategic management. Second is uncertain that might not be controlled by the assumed policies and procedures so here the management must take care of due factors which may seems to be minor but would have major impact on the company anyhow.
5. For resolving such type of issues a 10 step process must be followed:
a.Identify the problem as you see it.
b.Get the story straight - gather relevant data. (Federal, state, and local regultations, professional practice documents, Code of Ethics)
c.Ask yourself if the problem is a regulatory issue or a process issue related to regulatory requirements.
d. Compare the issue to a specific rule in Code of Ethics. Determine if rules the Code of Ethics apply to your problem and can help develop a course of action for you to pursue.
e.Identify who has the power and control in the situation.
f.Identify what is in your control and what is not.
g.Identify your resources. These can be a supervisor, special education director, or colleague. Ask yourself if you need more information, clarification, or ideas from others who have had a similar problem.
h.Make a list of possible actions and their positive and negative consequences.
i.Make a plan that you can defend professionally and ethically and that meets the requirements of the regulations.
j.Take action and evaluate your plan as you proceed.
