Explanation / Answer

       Training and development of employees is beneficial to the employee and the organization. By developing employees, organizational goals are met as the individual is achieving personal growth. Training and development of employees increases productivity and morale, creates an atmosphere of ongoing learning, incorporates team work, and improves overall quality. Training helps develop leadership skills which mean successful workers and managers. As each area increases, the organization becomes profitable and builds a reputation of an organization that cares about its employees.

Employee Development Methods

     Employee development can come from different places. There are core trainings, personal development plans, leadership trainings, and mentor development programs. Core training teaches employees the basics of their position. This gives the employee the knowledge to do their job. Personal development plans are a partnership between the employer and employee. The employer and employee create a list of goals and ways to achieve those goals. Personal development plans allows the employee to stay on track and work harder within the company. Leadership training places the best performing employees in specialized training to develop skills to become leaders in the organization. Leadership training allows the organization the flexibility to promote from within. Finally, mentor development programs pairs “a member of management with an employee to help the employee achieve more in her professional life” (Jenkins, 2011). Mentoring helps employees develop positive working relationships and an internal network to rely upon. Whatever development method an employee chooses, he or she will enjoy their work more and become successful in their position.

Organizational and Employee Development

     Organizational development is just as important as employee development. Employee development and organizational development affect one another. Employee development has flexibility for the employee to decide which development plan to take whereas organizational development requires a specific plan. Employee development can be generalized and broad but organizational development focuses on exact areas. Although both areas are different in their approach, they both lead to positive contributions to the organization.

Human Resource Management in Career Development

     The role of Human Resource Management is to help employees reach their potential while providing a happy and productive work environment. The Human Resources department assists employees develop goals, provides feedback, and helps identify skills and interests that will allow the employee to develop and career track accordingly. The HR department is aware of openings in the organization and can fit an employees’ skill set with those open positions. Encouraging employees to develop themselves and providing career growth is among the most important roles in Human Resource Management.

Personal Career Development

     My personal career development began seven years ago. Seven years ago the Human Resources Manager for our company took Family Medical Leave and I, merely a clerk, was given her tasks to manage along with my own. With no proper training or degree, I managed but was not working to my fullest potential and was not the best qualified for the position. A Human Resources Director was hired a year later and my development was set in motion. After being told that I could not promote within our department without a degree, even though I had working experience, my personal development began with education. The organization has a wonderful training department that has supplemented my education with emerging Human Resources issues.

     Five years from now, I am hoping to have a Masters degree, PHR certification, and a Human Resources Director position of my own. My organization has helped with working experience to couple with my education. I have experience in some aspects of Human Resources and have a few more areas such as Training and Worker’s Compensation being weaved into my daily work schedule. I credit my immediate supervisor and the Vice President of the company for recognizing my skills and helping me career track.
