Question
Unsigned and Signed Integers
4. Suppose we are designing a computer system and n = 12-bits are allocated for unsigned integers. What is the range,
in decimal, of unsigned integers that can be represented? For full credit, explain your answer.
5. In the same system, n = 12-bits are allocated for signed two's complement integers. What is the range, in decimal, of
signed integers that can be represented? For full credit, explain your answer.
6. Continuing, what would be the two's complement representation of the decimal integer -1? Write your answer in hex and for full credit, explain your answer.
Explanation / Answer
Answer :
For 1s compliment : -2^n -1 to +2^n -1
For 2s compliment : -2^n to +2 -1
n is size here. Just put values of n, you will get range. Put n=4. 1s compliment range would become : -2³-1= -7 to 7.
Similarly you can find the range from any numerical representation , whether it is 1's complement or 2's
