Most of the representatives are techies and are anxious to propose the latest and greatest media available. Your job is to help keep the big picture in perspective. From your studies this term, class discussions, research and insights from the instructor, think about the general types of guided media. Provide multiple advantages and potential disadvantages of each (fiber / coaxial cable / twisted pair). What are some common uses for each of the three? And don't forget security implications! The transmission media in which the signals are guided to a specific path by using a cable is called as Guided media. The following are the types of guided media :
1. Twisted pair cable : A twisted pair cable has two types , Unshielded twisted pair and shielded twisted pair .
a) Unshielded twisted pair has two conductors and is made up of copper having each of its plastic insulator.
b) Shielded twisted pair has the metal foil with each of its insulated conductors.
Advantages : They are flexible , less expensive , They are easy to install and have high speed capacity .
Disadvantages : The Bandwidth is lesser than coaxial cable, they are heavy and have less protection against interference .
Uses : Twisted pair cables are used in Ethernet LAN cables , In telephone lines.
2. Coaxial cable : Coaxial cables are made up of copper conductor from inside and have a outer copper shield and a dielectric insulating material separating them.
Advantages : They have high bandwidth , high noise immunity , They are good for long distance transfers.
Disadvantage: They are difficult to install , They can result in grounded loop.
Uses : They are used in cable TV networks , In Phone lines , In internet access lines.
3. Fiber optic cables : Fiber optic cables use electric signals for transmission of data . They are made up of multi mode fibers with glass cladding and an outer shield protecting them.
Advantages : It transmits with very high speed, Noise disturbance is less , It can transmit both analog and digital signals.
Disadvantages : They are expensive , Difficult to install, and do not route light signals completely .
Uses : Fiber optic cables are used in WAN , LAN , In telephone lines.
The two guided media which are more useful to be used in building to be constructed are , Coaxial cables and Fiber optic cables . The coaxial cables can transmit the data having medium to high data rate, They provide good immunity towards noise because of which signal strength will be good for longer distances, and it has dielectric insulating material which prevents loss of signals.
The fiber optic cables are thin and do not support electrical interference , thus they help in longer distance communications , They are widely used in LAN , WAN, with high data rates . They are used in both analog and digital signals communication , Hence coaxial cables and fiber optic cables are more recommended.
The terms bandwidth and throughput are interchangeable , they give the speed of the device with which the data is sent and received. Bandwidth gives the information about the device data sent and recieved by it. Throughput is the measure of data which is sent and received by the device.
Fiber Optic cables provide high throughput of data because it consists of thin fibers having high capacity which are of high quality and provide fastest speed due to less noise and distortion disturbances .
The guided media commonly used in LAN is fiber optic cable , which has a total capacity of 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps and they can consists of thousands of stations in a building. .
The most commonly used guided media in US is fiber optic cables , they have wide applications in fields of internet , telephone , and in other networks due to their advantages over other guided medias like high speed , quality , and less losses.
