Motivation plays a significant role in nowdays. This is very effective especially for addressing the tem of large employees. In organizations lot of motivational practices are being applied by the managers for motivating the employees. The principle of motivation is that if employee seens that there is some benefit for the employee, then he will willing to perform better and he will try to achieve the target results.
Motivated people can perform significantly than the person with negative thoughts or frustration. Developing the willingness of the employee or people and avoid the negative energy or frustration from the employees is known as motivational process.
There are two types of motivation
· Intrinsic Motivation – This is the motivation in a person due to his internal thoughts or his internal means for achieving some specific purpose. This motivation helps the people to keep focused on the objective and apply his best efforts to achieve the desired results. In this case , the intervention of other person is not needed. The person is self motivated. These are basically due to responsibility, ownership, desire of achievement etc. This type of motivation is long lasting.
· Extrinsic Motivation – In this case the person is motivated by external means like rewards, promotion, benefits, fear etc. This motivation is time being motivation and it will not last for long time. This motivation is a situation based motivation.
Need Theory – The motivation is based on the need theory. The need generates the motivation in a person. It is the need which pushes the person to perform better to achieve the desired result for the same. If the people are able to manage their wants and needs then they are better motivated. Need theory distinguishes between the primary needs (Food, cloths, shelter) and the secondary needs (psychological, nice to have requirements etc.).
Maslow hierarchy of Needs is as below
1. Self Fulfillment
2. Esteem
3. Social Needs
4. Safety Needs
5. Physiological Needs
All this five needs are the level of needs. They have different motivation levels based on the need levels.. As we satisfy one type of needs, the motivation shifts to next level of needs. Once the second level of need is completed then the motivation moves to the third level of needs and so on. Thus these needs are the basis of motivation is a person, which push the person to drive his efforts to achieve the desired results.
