Parallel Sysplex

Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS)

Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS): It combines two technologies namely parallel sysplex and remote copy in order to make applications available in an efficient manner and deal with recovery issues.

ANS 3:

Primary role of Sysplex:- Enhances the number of connections between the processing units and OS.

Primary role of Parallel Sysplex:- Has the same function but makes it more efficient using dynamic workload processing and setting prioritizing criteria as preffered by the user.

ANS 5:

In order to implement Sysplex and Parallel Sysplex, the hardware component z/os needs to be available.

z/os: It is an operating system of a 64-bit configuration available for IBM mainframes.

Description

Book

A book in a mainframe is a compatible card which holds memory, processor and connections of the inputs and outputs.

CPC (Central Processor Complex)

CPC also known as CEC(Central Electronic Complex) is the hardware system which contains the main memory storage, central processor(may contain one or more), channels and timers.

Central Processing Unit

As the name suggests, it is that unit of a computer which takes raw data with instructions, performs operations on it to produce useful information which is a function of ALU(Arithmetic Logic Unit). It also controls the flow of the data from input devices to main memory and then from main memory to output devices, a function of CU(Control Unit).

Multiprocessor

A multiprocessor is a processor containing multiple processors other than the central processor.

Multicore

The working of more than one CPUs on a single processor is reffered to as multicore.

Sysplex

A sysplex is a combined system of maiframes acting together, of a z operating system.

Coupling Facility

Coupling Facility is a part of computer hardware system which enables same data to be accessed by multiple processors.

CSS

Channel Subsystem

CSS supervises the data flow and input-output instructions and makes sure that they reach the expected control unit.

IBM 3990

Control Unit

It is a control unit which is connected to single or multiple processors through channels.

IBM DS8000 Storage Server

It is a series of disk storage compatible with continuous operations as it is high in performance.

ESCON Channel and Director Switch

ESCON is used to form a channel connection through the help of fibres.

FICON Channel and Director Switch

It is a fibre connection overcoming the problem of bandwidth.

PCIe

It forms an interface between peripheral devices and the computer with a merit of high speed connection.
