Motivation is defined as a reason or reasons for behaving or acting in a particular way. Each individual is different and therefore, the reasons that motivate an individual to do a particular action may vary from person to person. In a professional setup, the success of an organisation largely depends on how motivated its employees are. The people in leadership positions play a key role in keeping the employees motivated. No matter how much one says, “You cannot motivate an individual, he has to motivate himself”, we all require some kind of external motivation everyday. Your willingness to show up at the workplace and work hard for the success of the organisation depends on how motivating the work environment is. There are many factors that motivates me as an employee and it has largely to do with my immediate manager and his behaviour towards his/her sub-ordinates. Some of the motivating factors for me as an employee are discussed below:

How meaningful the work is?

What significance does the work, that is assigned to me, holds in the overall growth of the organisation. As an employee, it motivates me when the work that I am doing is important for the organisation and that I am contributing to the business in a meaningful way. Although, each individual may have different perceptions towards the meaningfulness of a job. For me, a job is meaningful if it meets my expectations and is aligned to my education, skill set, past experience, etc. If my contributions are going to have a direct impact on the business of the organisation, it is meaningful for me and it motivates me to work harder and contribute better.

What is the attitude of the manager towards the team?

No one likes to be micro-managed. A manager should never micro-manage his team. It is a huge demotivating factor for an employee if his manager is after his life for every small thing. Employees like to be trusted and believed. A manager after discussing and assigning the work to his sub-ordinates should keep trust and belief in their abilities of accomplishing the work on time and with desired quality. As an employee, it makes me feel responsible and motivates me for knowing that my manager, my organisation trusts me.

Who gets the credit for good work?

It is the quality of a great leader to give credit to his team wherever its due. A leader should ensure that the work of their sub-ordinates gets noticed, recognised and appreciated. Nothing can be more motivating for an employee when his contributions are acknowledged and appreciated by the organisation. On the contrary, taking all the credit for the good work of the team and blaming others when the team doesn’t produce the desired results are some of the worst qualities that a leader can have. It adds to the demotivation of the employees and creates a negative workplace environment.

In one of my previous organisations where I was the store manager of an upcoming fast food chain, I had close to 15 sub-ordinates working under my supervision. In an organisation, motivation is contagious. If the leader himself is not motivated enough, it will reflect on the team as well. Therefore, being in the leadership position in the store, I had to continuously motivate myself and keep the team motivated to achieve the targets set by the management for our store. There was this particular scenario where we were falling short of achieving our monthly sales and quality performance targets and it required the team to work harder even it it meant coming to work an hour early. For a week, I decided to myself come an hour early to the work without asking my employees to come early. It deeply motivated each of my employee seeing their manager is working so hard for the welfare of the store and as a result, from the next week onwards, all of them started coming early without me even asking them to. With early preparations, we were able to commence the business activities much early than the regular store timings. We surpassed our sales targets for that month by a comfortable margin. That’s how a leader can keep his employees motivated by keeping himself motivated.
