For your initial posting Google Howard Medical Students: Do We Look Suspicious? and Howard University Trayvon Martin "Am I Suspicious?" Campaign Video. View the video and become familiar with one recent example of online student activism. Using Twitter, Facebook, and other forms of social media, Howard University students have worked together to challenge people to look beyond stereotypes of young Black men. This new form of activism reflects changing times, changing causes, and changing technology. Social media has changed the nature of social activism among students. Search the Internet for two other examples of teams of students using social media to promote a cause, protest, and/or address some social justice. In your initial posting address with each example, what was the goal of the students involved, and how do you think social media impacted students’ ability to achieve their goal? Do you feel that social media promotes or hampers activism among groups of students? Explain. What can managers learn from this? How can these learnings be applied to business?

The two examples where school or college students using social media for promoting a cause are
(a) Arc's foundation -It was started in 2013 by high school students Ivan Boyers, Andrew Goodrum and Ariel Kim who volunteered to three different locations in Ghana in a community service project. They set up a site for physically disabled children. They wanted to set up a school, for which they needed to raise money for which they took to social media like facebook and twitter to gather support and contribution.
(b) - #Metoo - It is a social media campaign organized by AUC to address the issue of sexual harassment of women on university campus. The campaign enables the victims of harassment to share the incidents and create awareness about the cause and providing a preventive guideline to the students to stay safe and the means of reaching out to the authorities for lodging complaints.
Social media is a great tool that unites all internet users across the globe and can be used to good effect in gaining online support tfrom student groups throughout the world, reaching out to enforcement, legal and administrative authorities to speed up the process of event and creating awareness among the students through sharing of information.It may also be used to gain financial support to accomplish a social cause from potential donors. It increases the efficiency and promptness of the campaign through the speed by which the it goes viral and reaches the target audiences.
Social media promotes activism among groups of students by making the process of sharing, putting up a point, decision making, collaborating, activation and implementation easy, prompt and cost effective. It needs minimum of resources and provides maximum returns on efforts through reaching out to maximum recipients.
Managers can learn about the power of social media for collaboration, reaching out to customers, creating online support and opinion, user experience sharing and creating goodwill online to gain competitive advantage through cutting down the cost of acquisition of customer by reducing the cost of marketing effforts considerably,as social media campaigns offer highest return on investment. The customers' opinion can be utilised as one of the most credible tools for converting a potential customer in comparison to the conventional methods.
