Surveys can be performed in a form of questionnaire or interviews. Questionnaires are usually paper and pencil instruments that are completed by responding to some questions. Interviews are performed by people asking the questions to another person face to face, or by phone. Surveys that are made by phone are automated random phone calls which are computerized. Interviews are more personalized, it has opportunity to review or ask follow-up questions.

Some advantages of surveys are the high representativeness which provides a high level of general capability in representing a large population. Another is the low cost when conducting a survey, you only need to pay for the production of survey questionnaires. The convenient data gathering, surveys can be administered to the participants through a variety of ways. For example, via e-mail, mail, or fax. Also, surveys has a good statistical significance because of the high representativeness brought about the survey method, it is often easier to find statistically significant results than other data gathering methods.

Some disadvantages are the inflexible design. No ideal for controversial issues, questions that bear controversies may not be precisely answered by the participant. Also, possible inappropriateness of questions in surveys are always standardized before directing them to the subjects.

Among all methods of conducting surveys, interviews and questionairres are two important ones. A survey gives insights about the opinions of the target poulation in the least expenses, covers larger part of population and can be made more effective with the use of technology in comparison to the conventional methods. It is more credible because the bias is eliminated through representation from a diverse background of participants and inclusion of variety of opinions.

Some limitations of survey are the one way communication that sometimes fails to provide accurate picture of other person's opinions, uncustomized designs that are common to all, participant's inability to understand some issue, ineffective design of the survey overlooking the main issues to be covered and fake responses that make the exercise irrelevant.
