Question
This is an important concepts for all future managers. Think back to your experiences in the workplace past or present. Can you think of a time in which your organization failed to employ a systems management philosophy? Remember that a systems approach encourages managers to understand that decisions made in one area of the "system", can have an impact in other areas of the "system". Can you think of a time during your employment where one department made a decision and failed to realize how this decision would impact other departments in the "system"?
Explanation / Answer
The system management philosophy is an important aspect for managing and controlling business operations. When the processes are standardized, the quality is streamlined by adhering to the processes and dependency on the employee reduces. Only employees should be trained and developed to follow the standard operating procedures to ensure quality outputs.
I would share a case where the decision of one department impacted the other departments in the system. The administration department of the company was handling the sale of the scrap which was generated in the various processes of the company. As the industry was operations were continuous, the removal of the process waste was an utmost important task from the work place and its subsequent disposal due to area constraint in the scrap yard. The accumulation of scrap yard would hinder the production processes and thus slow productivity due to non movement of the material.
They had fixed the three days in the week for scrap disposal-Monday, Wednesday, Friday and negotiated and deployed one vendor only to collect scarp from the industry. Due to some problem in their logistics network the scarp dealer did not pick scarp for two times which led to stoppages of the machines. If the decision of appointing two scrap dealers would have been in place by the administration department , the other department and company business would not have suffered.
