Explanation / Answer

Refrigerator is one of the most common household electrical appliance nowadays. The current model of refrigerator looks significantly different from the one that has been developed in the initial days, though the form factor remained same there are significant differences in the working and the usability as well. We will now look at one of the latest trends in the technology space, that is , internet of things being applied to the refrigerator.

The basic appliance which is used to store things in a controlled low temperature environment with a view to preserve the items, that is , prevent the decaying or the item getting wasted. The internet of things has transformed the experience per se, with the advent of smart refrigerators, that is, the ones which sense the type of food being stored and keeps a track of stock, this inturn will be used to notify when the item needs to be consumed and replenished. And all that happens over the cloud and everything is linked to your smart phone. The system essentially consists of sophisticated temperature and humidity sensors to perform the task.

Apart from just the food and the content, the internet of things could be expanded to the back end of the refrigerator as well, with advanced sensing technology integrated to the on board mini computer system already existing on the smart fridges can be used for diagnosis where a technical fault can be detected and notified to the user, cooking tips based on the items available in the fridge and recipes based on the same also considering the products which are expiring in the next 2 days. Overweight and energy monitoring also can be integrated with the system for a more aware user.

The challenges that might be appearing due to the integrated devices is that it is always vulnerable to hacking and therefore personal data leak, privacy could be another concern.
