Question
Dear Students,
The assignment is an opportunity for you to investigate operations management in practice and to carry out deeper investigations. We expect you to demonstrate further reading and investigation – and to compare what you see in your own organization (or an organization of your choice) with what is written in the academic literature.
Assignment Brief
Students should select an organization (which you have access to) and work through the following subheadings relating to operations within the organization. Students should write a report (using the headings below as a guide) discussing the operations of the organization, and making recommendations for improvement.
I have suggested some subheadings to consider under each heading – but these are not exhaustive topics (and you may discuss other things you see as being important). I would advise that you adopt a reasonably formal style and structure for your report. Include conclusions. Students should note that they do not need to look at an entire company but instead may decide to focus on a particular business unit or operation. For example, the student wants to look at a large international company – but only has access to one part of the organization – this is perfectly acceptable

Explanation / Answer
I have selected a by-cycle manufacturing company namely TI Cycles of India. This company manufactures and markets Hercules and BSA Brand of Cycles in India. It has about 2 manufacturing Units in India and have four regional Hubs in four sides of the country to cater to the distributes across the country.
The Objective of the company is to cater to the needs to poor for short distance transport for day to day work with their BSA range of cycles and to promote cycling in youth and children with their Hercules Brand.
The objective of the Operations Management is to provide Quality product at best possible price to vast customer segment. Part of the demand, that is for BSA brand is constant, whereas the demand of Hercules brand is uneven which changes as per he seasonal and has wide variety of range and models.
The management has to use the capacity to the fullest, at the same time, address to this varying demand fluctuation. The basic Value chain to produce the Cycle is as follows:-
- fabricated parts for the main body of the cycle including the wheel rim to be sourced from the vendors that are situated in the nearby area.
- Standard commodify parts like tyre, bearings, chain to be procured and sufficient inventory to be maintained to meet the demand as per the forecast.
- To do some of the activities like, painting, kiting and packing operations in the 2 manufacturing plants in the country.
To achieve the operations excellence, all the above activities needs to be performed to the as set performance indicators.
Importance of 5 performance objective of operations management to achieve the objective: -
- Cost :- The BSA range of the cycle is used by the poor people for the day to day transport in the villages and towns. This range of the customers are highly sensitive to the price/ cost of the product. Thus kitting the cost at every segment of the value chain ranging from procuring the standard parts from the market to sourcing the fabricated parts from the vendors and finally in house kitting and packing operating is the prime objective of the operation.
- Quality :- Even in the fierce competition with low margins, the customers expects value for money. Quality is the key driver for any product in the market. Quality of input Raw material for steel structure, painting Quality and finishing and Quality of other parts used the cycle are necessary for right product Quality. There is a team of people who check the Quality of input material and also at various stage of operations. If there is any rejection at any point of operations.
- Speed: - Here speed represents response time to cater to the market. Demand for BSA Brand is more or less constant throughout the Year and even growth is not so exponential. But for Hercules Brand, there is wide variety and demand is fluctuating. To meet the response time, Hercules brand is given the priority in manufacturing at any point of time, whereas to make up for the capacity utilization, BSA cycles manufactured. They maintain certain inventory of the BSA cycle at any point of time so that there is certain stock in the market even manufacturing is stopped for some time for BSA range.
- Dependability - Every supply chain operations works in co ordination with various stakeholder. These exposes the company to risk, at the same time makes it necessary to help them to meet organizational objective.
- Flexibility: -As mentioned earlier, for a range of cycles, demand is flexible and for another range, demand is constant. Thus the manufacturing system must be flexible manufacturing system to use same capacity for wide range of operations. In this organization, the plants are designed to manufacture wide range of cycle from the same setup with minor changes. Thus helping it to be more flexible to respond to changes in requirement. Also, inventory helps to cater to few fluctuations.
