This is a company that invests huge amounts of capital in research and development to reduce costs and gain efficiency in the largest part of their supply chain, delivery to the customer. Amazon has now beaten everyone else in the industry to the punch--it has now successfully patented a “method and system for anticipatory shipping.” Using the metadata Amazon collects on its customers (things like how long you hover your mouse over an item), they developed algorithms to predict when it is likely for customers in particular geographical areas to purchase particular products. The products are packaged for home delivery and sent to the targeted geographical hub, before a specific physical address is labeled on the package (since the customer hasn't actually ordered anything yet). Amazon has taken the retail industry to a different level where predictive analysis has allowed Amazon to predict the customer future order so that the customer gets the fastest delivery and it is opting for differentiation strategies where the customers are privileged with the fastest delivery. It is also trying to replace the need to shopping as if you want something, you get the fastest delivery without traveling sitting back at home. The patent of anticipatory shipping has simply aided this facility to the customer. Based on several factors like customers' preferences, past purchases, potential shopping products on which customer hovers, searching keywords, hovering time on a particular product, items in the cart, liked products etc., Amazon tracks the requirement and the product will be shipped to the nearest hub without even placing an order. Amazon with a vision to expand with the differentiation strategy will keep people excited and loyal for its prompt service.
