Arc Welding What is the effect of current and voltage in arc welding? Explain how the pulse transfer mechanism works (formation of the droplet and deposition) How does diameter of the rod (stick) or wire (mig) effect arc welding? In MIG welding, how can someone increase the width of a bead and reduce penetration? What is an issue with blunt tungsten tips? Why does keyhole welding allow for deeper penetration? How does the molten pool behave under high, and low pressure plasma welding? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Explanation / Answer

1) Higher the welding current , higher the heat input. The change in penetration can be done by varying voltage.

2) If an electrode is consumable, the tip melts under the heat of the arc and molten droplets are detached and transported to the work through the arc column. Any arc welding system in which the electrode is melted off to become part of the weld is described as metal-arc. In carbon or tungsten (TIG) welding there are no molten droplets to be forced across the gap and onto the work. Filler metal is melted into the joint from a separate rod or wire.

3) Smaller diameter wire gives increased current density, which results in narrower and deep weld bead penetration resulting in increased metal deposition whwn compared to larger diameter.

4) An increase in arc voltage increases the width of the bead in weld. Low current results in pilling of weld metal on the surface instead of penetrating into the surface. This helps in increase the reinforcement of weld bead without enough penetration.

5) A blunt tungsten tip has harder arc starting. It also has higher chance of arc wandering.

6) In keyhole welding technique , energy to melt the work piece is derived from high velocity stream of electrons generated from a thermionic cathode at high negative potential. This results higher penetration.

7)  High energy density of plasma melts the faying surfaces of base metal and high pressure plasma jet pushes the molten metal against vertical wall created by melting of base metal and developing key-hole.
