Question
Be sure to explain carefully how you are working the problem. I don't care if you do the arithmetic right, I know you could do that eventually, but I need to see how you are thinking about the problem. If you need to draw a figure or graph, you can make a sketch on paper and take a photo or scan it, and insert the image into your Word document. You can also write out solutions on paper and scan them and insert them into your word document. Just make sure they are legible before submitting. Practice
Problems: Chapter 2, Operations Strategy in a Global Environment
Problem 1: Identify how changes in the external environment may affect the OM strategy for a company. For example, what impact are the following factors likely to have on OM strategy?
The occurrence of a major storm or hurricane.
Terrorist attacks of 9/11/01.
The much discussed decrease in the quality of American primary and secondary school systems.
Trade Legislation such as WTO and NAFTA and changes in tariffs and quotas.
The rapid rate at which the cost of health insurance is increasing.
The Internet.
Problem 2:
Identify how the changes in the internal environment affect the OM strategy for a company. For example, what impact are the following factors likely to have on OM strategy?
The increased use of Local and Wide Area Networks (LANs and WANs)
An increased emphasis on service
The increased role of women in the workplace
The seemingly increasing rate at which both internal and external environments change.
Problem 3: Operations managers are called upon to support the organization's strategy. OM does this with some combination of one of three strategies. What are these three strategies?
Explanation / Answer
Problem 1: Identify how changes in the external environment may affect the OM strategy for a company. For example, what impact are the following factors likely to have on OM strategy?
Answer :
How External Environment affects OM
OM (Operations Management) involves the backend system of organisations like manufacturing, production, logistics. supply chain management, business continuity, planning and staffing. Changes in the external environment often end up disrupting the backend process of most businesses. For Example the The occurrence of a major storm or hurricane and the Trade Legislation such as WTO and NAFTA and changes in tariffs and quotas are more likely to affect the OM strategy.
For Eg : When there's a Hurricain or a storm , businesses will need to quickly relocate their staff to an off site office or have a system where the another office can balance the work load of a non functioning office. Callcentres often use this strategy. Most callcenters have multiple locations around the world. In case on site isn't able to function due to the weather, the call flow can often be shifted to another site. ensuring that customers are not effected.
Changes in Trade Legislation such as WTO and NAFTA and changes in tariffs and quotas might effect the way business operate their manufacturing operations.
Here's an example
This case is famously known as DaimlerChrysler Corp Vs The United States of America in the year 2000. The case had to do with the the tariffs levied by US Customs Service on the trucks manufactured in DaimlerChrysler Corp's plant in Mexico. US Fedar laws wave import tariffs if the vehicle is manufactured using US Parts. based on NAFTA or the North American Free Trade Agreement, which also includes Mexico as on of the countries. While a federal statute classified painting as incidental or ( a minor part of ) the assembly process, another federal regulation states that painting for the purpose of enhancing existing appearance or for imparting distinctive features isn't incidental or (isn't a part of the assembly process), based on this regulation, US Customs levied a tariff on the Trucks assembled and imported from DaimlerChrysler Corp's Mexican Plant.
Problem 2:
Identify how the changes in the internal environment affect the OM strategy for a company. For example, what impact are the following factors likely to have on OM strategy?
How Internal Environment affects OM
Internal environment affects operations management as much as external factors. Factors like The increased use of Local and Wide Area Networks (LANs and WANs), An increased emphasis on service and The seemingly increasing rate at which both internal and external environments change are more likely to have an impact on OM strategy.
For eg Here's an Example of how LANs and WANs affected Uber's operations
Uber's usage of LAN (Local Area Network ) and WAN (Wide Area Network) helps its driver accurately locate the facility or the building / Area if the device that is used to hail the cab is connected to that campus's or building's network / wifi. This is an added metric to is use of GPS (global positioning). Uber tries to use multiple metrics in order to improve accuracy.
Some challenges in using these networks like cellular , LAN and WAN could be that when multiple sources of data try aggregate information , if the information of one or two sources is inaccurate, it still effect the resultant aggregate location. This is one major associated in using multiple metrics.
Problem 3: Operations managers are called upon to support the organization's strategy. OM does this with some combination of one of three strategies. What are these three strategies?
There are many different types of operations management strategies. Here are the three most common operations management strategies.
- Business Process Reengineering
- Automation
- Business Resiliency or Business Continuity
