Backmasking in simple words is a recording technique in which a sound or a message is recorded backward onto a track that is meant to be played forward.
Backmasking is a deliberate process, where a message found through phonetic reversal can be un-intentional.
Backmasking was popularised by the Beatles team, who had used backward instrumentation on their 1966 album Revolver. Various Artists since then used backmasking for artistic and comedic effect, on both analogue and digital recordings.
The technique has also been used to censor words or phrases for "clean" releases of various songs.
In Backmasking process, we can have the following steps:
a. Define and agree the objective.
b. Brainstorm ideas and suggestions having agreed a time limit.
c. Categorise/condense/combine/refine.
d. Access/analyse effects or results.
e. Prioritise options/rank list as appropriate.
f. Agree action and time-scale.
g. Control and monitor follow-up.
