Question
Scenario:
Dakota Wesleyan University indicates in many places in its public documents that it is a college which "affirms its relationship with the United Methodist Church" while at the same time maintaining a significant degree of independence from the church. It has a policy of inviting students and staff from a wide variety of religious perspectives to be part of the college's community, as part of its commitment to "fostering diversity in an inclusive atmosphere." Over the course of many years, a variety of issues and differences of judgment have occurred regarding the role of religion at DWU. This assignment asks you to reflect on some of those issues in the light of ideas discussed in the assigned readings on religious discrimination.
Question:
Regardless of your response to the legal question posed in the question above, what hiring policy related to religious orientation do you think would be most justifiable from an ethical perspective? Briefly describe your policy and compare it to at least one other. Then, support your decision with references to values/principles/factual claims which you think are important to consider. Also, indicate potential challenges to some of your supporting arguments.
Explanation / Answer
Hiring policy which does not discriminate anybody based on his/her religious practices is most justifiable from an ethical perspective. This is because Dakota Wesleyan University is an educational institute and students must be encouraged to be involved with each other and not discriminate based on religious beliefs of other students. Hence hiring policy must also be in line with that belief.
Another hiring policy could be based on hiring students of a particular religion only. This according to me is not such a good policy because it creates a sense of air among the students of that religion in the sense that they are above other religion students. This creates a negative attitude and leads to bad ettiquettes among the students. As I compare these two policies, it is pertinent that one policy is inclusive in nature whereas other policy is exclusive in nature. Both these policies are opposite but for the long term growth of the institute, it is better to go for inclusive policy which caters to a large group of students.
Values/principles/factual claims that are important to consider:
It is important to imbibe good values and principles among the students such that they must respect their fellows, do not discriminate basd on cast, creed, religion, color, sex etc, be supportive towards others and always be helpful in nature. Such values can only be incorporated if the institute sets an example and create its hiring policy keeping in mind the best interest of all the students and their development needs.
